Residential Complex in Gallarate - Álvaro Siza

The complex consists of 20 apartments in the centre of Gallarate, between Via Roma and Via Postporta, distributed over four floors. The design of this urban insert prioritises outdoor spaces and public and private paths, tr ying to adapt the traditional Lombard courtyard and the alleyways of the old town. Gallarate is a small town between Malpensa airport and the city of Milan, within the natural area of the Ticino Park, and, as a result, subject to landscape protection. The land available for construction (a rectangle of approximately 165 x 200 feet) lies between the boundary of the built fabric of the historic centre and the Liberty period buildings. A good example of these is provided by the 20th-century Borgomaneri factory on Via Roma, opposite the new residential complex.
