Description

South London Gallery Fire Station

The iron lantern above the door still reads ENGINES. Through the glass, there are canvases where the pump once stood, wall space where the ladder hung. London's oldest purpose-built fire station is now part of the South London Gallery. Constructed in 1867, the original building housed firefighters and their families above horse-drawn fire engines and a rear stable, before it was converted into the factory and offices for Kennedy's Sausages. When the local firm closed in the early 2000s, the Fire Station was sold but lay derelict until it was donated to the SLG.
