Smiljan Radić - London Sky Bubble [Tobacco Dock]

2021In the late 1960s, the architect Jan Kaplický created a collage for Richard Rogers' studio in which he juxtaposed traditional construction systems, represented by a standard, mid-century brick building —based on pillars, walls, and slabs— with the monocoque shell structure of a Volkswagen Beetle. From this seamless shell, a plug emerges, giving it a certain autonomy and mobility compared to the static city, anchored in the past, that acts as a plinth at its feet. At the same time, it becomes a parasite of the city. The London Sky Bubble seeks to establish relationships like the ones seen in this reference image.
