Kon-Tigo. Emergency Housing Units
On Wednesday 25 October 2023, Hurricane Otis, a category 5 storm, reached the coasts of Guerrero in Mexico, deemed the strongest tropical cyclone to ever hit the Pacific Coast. It caused immense damage to infrastructure and left some 250,000 families without access to their homes. Hurricane Otis highlighted the economic vulnerability affecting the majority of the population.
Natural phenomena like this often most severely affect communities with limited resources —revealing problems in the social fabric and the quality of infrastructures— and they force us to consider the need to strengthen and improve conditions in the most vulnerable areas to help rebuild community life. That is how Kon-Tigo was born, understanding housing as a primary need of the population and drawing on a historical, contextual, and social analysis, but also questioning how housing in Mexico responds to these kinds of events.
