São Lourenço do Barrocal Tourist Complex

This is neither Vol de Nuit (Saint-Exupéry, 1930), nor Belle de Jour (Buñuel, 1967). It is just a reconstruction of an 'Alentejo rangeland', an old farm complex in the Alentejo, striving determinedly to endure. The most difficult part wasn’t building it or shaping the adobe bricks, but setting that smile, the Smile at the Foot of the Ladder (Henry Miller, 1959), a ladder that never existed, which is why we had to invent it.
